Three Kings, Three Families

They brought the sacred stone out of the temple of Baal and tore down the temple of Baal, and people have used it for a latrine to this day.....From2 Kings 10
Three families, camping in a National Park.We had a good time, standing still for a brief period, marveling at God's creation. We took a 4x4 route the one day. We passed a 'No Entry' sign where there were clear indications of a religious gathering of some sorts allowed (in a national park!) Imitations of a man-faced rock from the area was visible, centred in a circle of rocks. We drove further. Got slightly off course, ended up having a picnic in the heat of the day in what shade a lovely tree had to offer. It was on the same road me and my family saw a leopard with our previous visit.

Us mothers got concerned, we didn't bring enough water along for this trip. Yet we got back to base camp alive although parched , hot and dusty.

Much later, on our way back home, we stopped for lunch. The BJ's Fastfood outlet menu had a write-up on the origin of their 'Chicken' dish. Something about a million years ago, when some pre-historic baptists (this is for real !) gathered under the trees for worship.
I read the history in 2 Kings 3 about Three Kings on a journey to war their mutual enemy. They got stuck in a desert without water and feared for their lives. They consulted Elisha, a prophet of the Lord God. Through Elisha, God said they must dig ditches.Even though there is no sign of wind or rain, He, God, will fill up the place with water. The Lord kept His Word and not only were their lives saved, they also conquered their enemy.

Lord God. We are Three Families, just like those Kings of old. We also journey through arid desert-like places in life. Our family's Christian lives being threatened by sin, temptations, idol worship and evil all round. Lord, give us the courage to trust You, while facing these obstacles that threatens our very existence as God-fearing families in this country. Grant us the faith to prepare for receiving Life giving Water from You for survival. Let us make space in our lives, dig holes and remove some bad soil. Grant us victory over our enemies.Let our light shine for You, let us praise Your Name !
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing !
Now it springs up; do you not percieve it ?
I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.
The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.
Isaiah 43;18-21

25 Years later.....

It's been a long time since I've blogged here. I am knee-deep in my teaching studies and find very little time to blog. This time, opposed to 25 years ago when I started tertiary studies, I am soooo reliant on God! I cannot clearly remember one day in my previous studies, that I was in earnest prayer regarding my studies, asking the Lord to help me or thank Him for blessing me in my studies.

Shame on me !

This time, I am soooo in need of His every morsel of blessing ! I wake up and ask Him:

Lord ! Please, today let me achieve what I must ,give me my daily bread regarding this studies.Help me not to over-commit and help me not get despondent. Open my eyes to see when I am neglecting my family and other responsibilities, that I can quickly repent and do the right thing. So help me Lord. Thank You for Your every encouragement. Thank You for a loving , understanding husband's support. Thank You for gifted children who are doing so well .Thank You for this opportunity.Thank You that I do not have to work right now. Thank You also for a drizzle of locum-opportunities to augment our income here and there. You are so good to me my God ! Amen

Ask at the right address

I recently read two books on the subject 'Woman at home' or I should say 'Woman not working in the formal workplace' The two books have vastly different approaches on the subject.
BIG purple Mommy by Coleen Hubbard http://www.bigpurplemommy.comhave a secular approach while Passionate Housewives desperate for God by J Chancey & S McDonald http://www.yoursacredcalling.blogspot.comhave a Christian approach.

The fact that the topic gets addressed in book-form, tells me that it is a topic that is current and of interest to woman everywhere. It's as if woman wants validation for what they do with their lives when it falls outside the stereo-type .Staggering that the 'stereo-type' have changed so much through only 2 generations ! Mothers in the sixties were typically at home; there was no need to write a book about WHY you are staying at home.Mothers of the seventies and later, are professionals, super woman juggling work and family in an every faster spinning world. If you as a woman are staying at home in the 21st century, you somehow need to justify that.

I 'm not going into the pro's and con's of these two books and their differences. My advise: Go read for yourself after you have asked the Lord's advice on this matter. I recall the words of a dear old lady in her eighties,speaking at a Christian function I attended some years ago;

Woman, you just serve the Lord !
Man, dien jy net die Here ! (her words in Afrikaans)

I am keeping to her advise. We all struggle with our roles in life, wondering if we are doing the right thing by staying at home or working outside the home. Commit your ways to the Lord and He will give you peace on this issue. No one woman or author can tell you what is right. God knows. And if you ask Him, He will answer you irrefutably on this issue and grant you His peace.

Commit your way to the Lord[roll and repose each care of your load on Him];trust (lean on, rely on,and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass. Psalm 37:5 (AMP)

Now to Him Who, by (in consequience of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and ] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we dare ask or think [ infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hope,or dreams ] - To Him be the Glory....... ! Amen Ephesians 3 (AMP)

A ' Nie-Blanke' Christmas

This posting is for all of my sister's friends out there ,having a 'Blanke' Christmas, wondering how Sister's African Christmas has been.

Africa has been tender towards them, not wanting to scare away her children who came to visit - the usual December heat being down a couple of degrees this year.

Sister's eldest remarked about the incredulousness of having a Christmas Braai . His uncles roped him in to teach him some of the finer skills of 'braaing' on Christmas eve.The girls enjoyed the swimming and tanning summer has to offer. All of the children, I'm sure, would rather have wanted to be at the coast, enjoying the sea, than hanging out in Wes-Transvaal.

Sister's hubby remarked on the similarity between a Mexican street and 'Scholtz' street of his hometown. She 'dared' taste some of the grapes passed on to her through the window of the bakkie by some 'straat-smous'' This off course means you have to buy...I wondered if she forgot.

Hubby couldn't resist the lovely variety of fresh fruit available. He kept on buying more and more , giving the muggies a Christmas feast of their own.

There is the disappointment of 'above zero' interest in the art of Coffee drinking.Maybe due to the heat, Africa's people are less interested in the hot beverage ? At least they found kindred spirits in myself & my Hubby enjoying coffee. Thanks for the STARBUCKS travel mugs !

Sister's Hubby spoiled the family kids with all the trips to WIMPY . Silently Mam and myself appreciated this gesture since we had less mouths to feed after such an outing.I do however know there is a price still to be paid when my eldest would insist on continuing the visits with such regularity once his Uncle has left again.

A visit to a family farm is bound to make you feel Africa's breath in your neck and her dark, sweaty pulse on your skin. Couldn't believe sister didn't recognise Nguni cows ! Sister's Eldest stood on the back of a bakkie, hobbling over the dirt road, to close a bek-slaner gate.He is so big, I noticed; that same little boy whom I was cradling in my arms, walking up and down the passage of the house in Bloemfontein, not so many years ago.Youngest remarked that she was born in Pretoria. A flutter of words from the locals, knowing the current talk of that city's name changing to Tswane.
Yes, I will not deny you a glimpse of the politics. How can I ? Sister have such strong emotions about it all.To the degree that I am tempted to blame it on the Baklei-wyn we've been enjoying.
Our country is not what it was. It will never again be, I don't think so. And the reason is not because I think God is planning never ever to come through for the Afrikaners again. On the contrary. The reward for those living according to His will, is not just in heaven, but also in this life.I believe the reward for Afrikaners is now in restored relationship with the living God and gratefulness in the small things of life.

An example of the above: A small thing, like a mustard seed, was Boet's emotional declaration of where his faith is at. I heard the miracle of basic foundations of faith being declared ,even if some huge non-disputable matters still hang in the balance.

I was encouraged to leave it at that, regarding Boet, and be of good courage to pray him through the next step and the next. My encouragement came from Sister's Hubby. He shared how he tell people to pray for a loved one on the brink of life and death (he works somewhere on that brink) Through experience (and he has lots!) he has witnessed the difference prayer makes when a body is broken beyond human hope for life. Greatly was I encouraged to continue praying where a spirit is broken beyond human hope for eternal life.Sister, pray with me for Boet and all our family's 'multitudes of Abraham' still to come into the fold !

My Hubby is concerned for Sister.We all are. Where she's at emotionally about the state of our Country.Our love will urge us on, continuing praying for her for God's perfect peace on this issue. Only He can give that peace beyond understanding.Us Afrikaners left here can not possibly live up to Sister's expectations of what Afrikaners should be and aim to be. We all face living in the brokenness of life after sin.It taints the Afrikaners as much as it taints every other nation. First and foremost we must aspire to bring all (family and all who cross our paths) into the fold of God. That fold where all are Children of God ,becoming blameless and pure, without fault ,within this crooked generation where they shine as the stars of the universe, as they hold out the Word of Life.(see Phil 2).In Africa or in Canada or where ever God has placed you for His purposes.Passing on from Hubby;
Christ did not come to shield us from the grieve and pain of life
But those who have His peace inside
Can thrive within the strife Sper
The Afrikaans family all agreed that Sister had to come visit to find her own closure on the death of her brother. We are grateful to her Hubby and children, who love her enough to join her out here in Africa. I cannot comment on how far and how much closure Sister have gotten on Broer's departure from this life. I think she will only know once back home in Canada. Olsy on this issue we poray for her for God's total peace.
Thanks for putting up with my amateur writing ! The explanation of some Afrikaans word used follows. Thanks for loving my sister like a sister out there in Canada.I do appreciate you all and am in your debt. Hope you had a wonderful Blanke Christmas.
Blanke = a word which means 'white' but is mostly used in SA when referring to a European descendant or 'White South African'
Braai = Barbecue
Straat-smous = street hawker
muggies = small bugs like fruitflies
Bakleiwyn = Having the type (or amount) of wine that makes you aggressive
Bek slaner = Wire make-shift gate used on farms. If handled incorrectly, the gate can hurt you and perhaps give you an injury in your mouth.
Pretoria = the political capital of the old SA, some want to change the name to Tswane.A very sensitive issue with Afrikaners in the country

God's unpredictable ways

Today Hubby was discouraged at work.An annual review of his performance just did not come out as positive and fair as he would have wanted it to.I was strangely encouraged this morning, prior to hearing the outcome of his review,by the history of David as written in 1 Samuel 29- 31

David never dared lift his hand against Saul, God's annointed king. Not because he honered Saul, but because he honoured and revered God.This piece of history reveals the predicament David found himself in - a real catch 22
He found a save haven among the Philistines, where he could hide and be safe from King Saul, who sought to kill him.Yet, his heart was for his kinsmen and the Philistines did not trust him to partake in their war on Israel. They actually sent him home, refusing him joining in the war on Saul.
...Surely, as the Lord liveth, thou hast been upright and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight:for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords(princes of the philistines) favour thee not. 1Sam 29:6

David was broken and devastated when he turned around, going 'home' to his Philistine city Ziklag, only to find that the Amalakites have burned the city and taken every woman and child captive. The men with him, who's families was taken captive, were ready to stone him .How much worse could things possibly become !?
An outcast from Israel
Not trusted or really welcome among the Philistines
Those closest to him, ready to stone him and blame him for their misfortune

I am sure David wrote a Psalm of anquish in this time, asking God: WHY ?

How unpredictable GOD is in the way He acts in our lives. David could never have thought that the very next day, God would allow Saul to be killed in battle. David was not even in sight to lift his hand against Saul, God's annointed.God opened the door wide and broad for David to become the biggest, most loved king ever of Israel.
But could David have known this, the day before, when he was facing being stoned by the men with him ?

Awesome ! Awesome how God works so unpredictably in the lives of His loved ones.
We can only be certain of His predictable Love for us- never wavering or changing, waxing or waning. But the way He works out His love in our lives, we can not fathom or predict. This is where FAITH comes in , We have to believe and trust God that HE is busy with a plan, a good wonderful plan for our lives.Even when we are on the verge of despair.

So ! I am praying and interceding for my dear husband. For God to move the hearts of the 'Kings' in his life to act in my husband's favour and according to that good and wonderful plan God has in mind for him.God loves him dearly, this I know.

A lonely road

It's difficult to describe the feelings and thoughts around the announcement of my resignation at work. For myself it wasn't 'major' since I've been walking this path towards the decision for a very long time.I have written it all down , so as to remind me why and how I got here. What I can say is : It's a very lonely road ! It's not understandable to people if you say to them that God has given you not much choice and that you believe you'll be hit by lightning if you don't get on with obedience in the matter.

...What can I do with you, Judah ?
Your love is like the morning mist,
like the dew that disappears. Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets, I killed you with the words of my mouth; my judgements flashed like lightning upon you........Hosea 6

Today I fasted, seeking the Lord 's guidance for Manlief and myself regarding the application of godly wisdom in decisions around the investment of my pension/provident fund pay-out. It's a matter of Faith, no one person can tell you what is the best thing to do for the future. I Have to trust the Lord to lead us to making the best decisions.Only He knows what is waiting for us around the next corner of life.

In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. Proverbs 16:9

So, I am on this road, step by step. Mostly I walk alone, with only Manlief next to me.We walk like Emmaus Pilgrims, having our ears pricked for the truth and listening with the heart .We trust our Guide, even if He is not always visable to us in the heat of difficult decisions,cross-roads and choices to be made.

...Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?....Luke 24:32
